{"id":15011,"date":"2019-10-01T17:41:50","date_gmt":"2019-10-01T17:41:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/?p=15011"},"modified":"2019-09-28T17:54:32","modified_gmt":"2019-09-28T17:54:32","slug":"steamboat-arabia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/?p=15011","title":{"rendered":"Steamboat Arabia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Long ago, I remembered hearing about the recovery of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arabia_(steamboat)\">Steamboat Arabia<\/a> that \u00a0hit a snag and sank in the Missouri River in 1856 near Kansas City. What was amazing to me is that they found it buried 45 feet beneath a farmer&#8217;s field and about half a mile\u00a0from\u00a0where the river runs today.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/painting.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15049 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/painting-938x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"721\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/painting-938x1024.jpg 938w, https:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/painting-275x300.jpg 275w, https:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/painting-768x838.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This painting, by Gary R. Lucy, is titled THE ARABIA: The Afternoon of Her Last Voyage, 1856.<\/p>\n<p>The Arabia, loaded down with whiskey and other frontier necessities, \u00a0was on a routine run when it hit a snag.<\/p>\n<p>Incidentally,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Snag_(ecology)\"><em><strong>snag<\/strong><\/em><\/a> refers to trees, branches and such that are found sunken in rivers and streams. In this case, The Arabia ran afoul of a dead sycamore. it ripped open the hull, which filled with water. The upper decks stayed above water, and the only casualty was a mule that was tied to some equipment and was forgotten in the rush to abandon ship.<\/p>\n<p>Although the upper decks were above water the day it hit the snag, the boat sank into the mud that by the next day only the smokestack and the pilot house remained visible. Within a few days, these traces were also swept away.<\/p>\n<p>I found the story of the recovery pretty incredible.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Aereal-photo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14986 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Aereal-photo-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"880\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Aereal-photo-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Aereal-photo-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>How would you know where to begin to look? They dug until February 1987. They were digging with the landowner&#8217;s permission. They started to plan a museum &#8211; a <a href=\"http:\/\/1856.com\">privately owned museum<\/a>. Today it is still owned and operated by the Hawley family.<\/p>\n<p>In all, they unearthed 200 tons of artifacts!<\/p>\n<p>With the contents of the ship protected from light and oxygen, the artifacts they found were incredibly well preserved. It could make about five miles an hour going upstream, and it burnt about 30 cords of wood a day. How much is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.firewood-for-life.com\/cord-of-firewood.html\">cord<\/a>, you ask?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A full cord is determined by the total cubic feet of firewood, not necessary the measurements of the stack. However, the 4&#8242; x 4&#8242; x 8&#8242; shape is the most\u00a0common.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>128 cubic feet are in a cord. 30 cords of wood would be 3,840 cubic feet a day. That is about the size of the largest school bus that you would see on the road today.
