I was meeting up with Ginny. We got to know each other through Facebook. I saw her name on a mutual friend&#8217;s post, and I asked her if she was in my class. It turns out that her <em><strong>daughter<\/strong><\/em> was in my class! So, while we probably did meet back in the &#8217;90s, we got to know each other through Facebook.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8562\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8562\" style=\"width: 299px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/thumbs-up.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-8562\" src=\"http:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/thumbs-up.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"299\" height=\"287\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8562\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I love Facebook!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We met up at the The Charleston Visitor Center. This time I parked in the lot in front of the Center instead of in the parking structure. That was a little easier!<\/p>\n<p>Our first stop was the Charleston Museum, which is one of the oldest museums in the United States. It was founded in 1773 and opened to the public in 1824.<\/p>\n<p>It kind of reminds me of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cabinet_of_curiosities\">Cabinets of Curiosities<\/a> that became popular in Europe during the 17th century. \u00a0The items on display in the museum seemed to focus largely on the history of Charleston.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/bowl-with-fragment-from-bottom.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8508 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/bowl-with-fragment-from-bottom-1024x916.jpg\" width=\"660\" height=\"590\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/bowl-with-fragment-from-bottom-1024x916.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/bowl-with-fragment-from-bottom-300x268.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/bowl-with-fragment-from-bottom-768x687.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/bowl-with-fragment-from-bottom.jpg 1253w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There were pottery fragments. It looks to me like it was a headboard for a bed. I guess it was a common way to mark graves. There is a certain grace to items that have been well cared for and repaired. It kind of reminds me of something I saw in a tiny camper. Really, they kind of had a hodgepodge of things. It was pursued by an &#8220;armada&#8221; composed of four steam tugs, fifty to sixty rowboats and several other watercraft. It was killed and exhibited in Charleston for several days. Gabriel Manigault, who was the curator of the museum, collected and reassembled the whale&#8217;s skeleton and it has been on permanent exhibition ever since.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/baleen-and-stays.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8523 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/baleen-and-stays-1024x352.jpg\" width=\"660\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/baleen-and-stays-1024x352.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/baleen-and-stays-300x103.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/baleen-and-stays-768x264.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The whale&#8217;s baleen served to strain out the krill it lived on. It was also used to make the stays that were used in whalebone corsets. On the left side of the picture, you see the stays.<\/p>\n<p>The stays were part of an exhibit on fashion. We had been in the museum for quite a while, so we kind of skimmed through. Yes, the same Charles Pinckney I&#8217;ve been writing about in the last few posts. The vibrant red color was most likely achieved with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cochineal\">cochineal dye<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/pearl-buttons.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8526 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/pearl-buttons-1024x411.jpg\" width=\"660\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/pearl-buttons-1024x411.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/pearl-buttons-300x120.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/pearl-buttons-768x308.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>They also had a small display about pearl buttons that were made in Muscatine, Iowa around 1915. During the early 20th century, Muscatine was considered the pearl button capital of the world. Interesting.<\/p>\n<p>Our last stop before leaving the museum was the restroom. It&#8217;s on the second floor to take advantage of the breezes. Ginny and I parted ways. It&#8217;s always so good to meet up with friends!<\/p>\n<p>I got back to the campground and got packed up.
