I made it to the Carmel Mission and managed to find a good parking spot behind the Mission. I was a little concerned for two reasons:<br \/>\n1) The parking lot I saw when I visited with Joan was quite small and<br \/>\n2) I drive the world&#8217;s largest truck.<\/p>\n<p>I rejoiced in my good parking fortune and found a seat in the church.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/altar.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9610 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/altar-1024x639.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"412\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/altar-1024x639.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/altar-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/altar-768x480.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I was quite taken with the ambo that the cantor and readers used. He died at the mission in 1784. He is buried under the sanctuary floor of the mission.<\/p>\n<p>The mission buildings and its lands were secularized by the Mexican government in 1833. If this is an accurate restoration, this is where he died on August 28, 1784.<\/p>\n<p>Junipero Serra was\u00a0canonized by Pope Francis on September 23, 2015. This has not been without controversy. Some Native Americans criticize Serra&#8217;s treatment of their ancestors and associate him with the suppression of their culture.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/cenotaph.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9616 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/cenotaph-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"880\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/cenotaph-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.towingsilver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/cenotaph-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I had assumed that this was a cenotaph that honored Junipero Serra and that he was interred elsewhere. I didn&#8217;t realize when I was there that he was actually buried under the sanctuary floor.
